Details for 2023’s Winter Solstice Lantern Stroll

Join with the Cambridgeport community as we celebrate the winter solstice by walking together to spread light throughout the neighborhood.

More about the Winter Solstice Lantern Stroll
Since 2021, we have hosted a Winter Solstice Lantern Stroll where we come together to light up the longest night. The night begins on the Cambridgeport playground with a lantern making station and hot cocoa and hot cider. Then we gather together for a with a lantern-lit stroll through the neighborhood. It’s a fun way to break up the long winter!
The event is free to all members of the Cambridgeport Community. Participants are welcome to bring your own lanterns from home too. LED tea lights will be provided to light the way.

The Winter Solstice marks the longest night and shortest day of the year, as well as the official beginning of winter. The phenomenon is caused when the Earth’s axis tilts the furthest away from the sun, giving less than 12 hours of daylight to all locations north of the equator. Although it’s the day of greatest darkness, the Solstice is a time of great hope for the sun’s rebirth, as we start to move towards the Summer Solstice once again. This moment has been marked with festivals and feasts by peoples around the world for centuries.
